Survey About Second-Career Teachers: A Doctoral Dissertation

Dear Colleague, My name is Joseph Coladonato, and I am currently a teacher in the East Williston Union Free School District.  I am also a doctoral candidate at Long Island University's Post Campus. Currently, I am conducting a doctoral study called Attitudes about Second-Career Teachers: An Exploratory Q Study of School Administrators and Classroom Teachers. I am respectfully requesting your help as a teacher or administrator on Long Island.  My anonymous survey will take approximately 30…See More

In the summer of 2007, I completed the Advanced Graduate Degree in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. As a teacher in the East Williston U.F.S.D. for the past eight years, I have enjoyed teaching students in the 7th grade. During my tenure at the Willets Road Middle School, I have taught 7th grade English and social studies and presently also teach a course named Conflicts and Controversies. Currently, I am working toward a doctorate in education at C.W. Post, and I look forward to pursuing a career in educational leadership. Addtionally, if the opportunity presents itself, I would like to teach at the college level.

Second-Career Teachers

I am interested in learning more about second-career teachers. Particularly, I am interested in examining school administrators' perceptions in hiring, supporting and retaining second-career teachers.

Please feel free to share any experiences on this topic.

For clarity, "second-career teacher" is defined as an individual that…

I agree with Regent Roger Tilles regarding evaluating teachers and competing in the global market. Evaluating teachers is an important component of good teaching. In recent decades, state standardized tests masked as "diagnostic assessments," which…

Conflicts and Controversies sounds very interesting...is it an elective? What topics do you include...do you include current day issues, or conflicts and controversies from the past, or both?

Hey Joe,

Congratulations! Did you have to take the GRE in order to apply? If so, when did you prepare for it and take it. That would be great if you could get started on your doctorate. It is definitely a huge time commitment, though. Let me know if you go ahead with it. Have you been looking for and applying for any administrative positions recently? I hope all is going well for you.

Hello Joe,

Have you been actively looking into going back for your doctorate recently? Which program are you leaning toward? Did you start yet? How is your school year going? I hope all is well.

Joe,

Great to hear from you! Chris still remembers you well, and I will pass along your email address. I am sure you have a bright future in education and leadership, and will share you name should I hear of any opening that matches your interests. Good luck!
