Last week, a retired schoolteacher left a comment on one of my articles, probably the saddest comment I’ve seen.

He retired after 30 years, then two years later he returned as a substitute. He said that he could feel the additional decline that had taken place in that short time. Another teacher commented by way of explanation: “The kids have given up.”

Both agreed that the kids could do the work but they no longer wanted to bother. They had withdrawn from the battle. The retired teacher sums it up this way: “I fear it’s too late for most of the kids. Not all of them, but most of them....”

That’s the essence of this sad story. See the linked article for the whole comment and more analysis. I believe that the Education Establishment has added in so many little obstacles, difficulties, unnecessary encumbrances. Children are not allowed to experience the reality that many of them may find fascinating. Instead they have to work their way through a maze of mickey mouse.

The Urban Dictionary defines the term this way: Substandard, poorly executed or organized. Amateurish. Who's in charge of this mickey mouse operation, anyway?

That's K-12 today. Our Education Establishment is in charge.
